I was engaged by Jonas Yoder Custom Homes (JYCH) in 2022 to provide conceptual design services for a custom home for their client. The house was completed in late 2025​.

The .4 acre property, formerly the home of the renowned artist Frank Colson, included both a “tear-down” older house and a traditional old Florida cottage of historical significance that was slated for historic preservation.

In contrast to the historic cottage to remain on site, the Owners wanted to construct a modern home in keeping with the “Sarasota School” of mid-century residential design. Blending the old and new structures to form a cohesive compound proved to be both challenging and rewarding.

The expansive three-bedroom house is approximately 3,300 SF conditioned area and 4,500 SF total area under roof in size​. JYCH’s innovative insulated cast in place concrete construction informed the new structure and contributes to it’s simplicity.

The plan is organized to have the living spaces arrayed around the private rear yard featuring a narrow lap pool / water feature. The pierced screen wall in front helps to buffer the house from the busy street.
